Hawaii Island as a Classroom: Taking Summer Academics to a Whole New LevelEvery classroom eventually takes on the aspects of a unique environment, thanks to the combined personalities of the teachers and students who use it over the years. But how many classrooms are already so unique, so rich in history, natural wonders, and educational opportunities that the location itself takes academics far beyond the average level?

The summer boarding program at Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy provides students in grades 6-12  from around the world the opportunity to engage in diverse class offerings that integrate and encourage environmental awareness and stewardship, and present students with the most unique classroom in the world: the island of Hawaiʻi!

Academics and More

Summer Session at HPA offers students an excellent introduction to the school’s traditional program and our instructors. Many students from around the world return every summer to take advantage of our outstanding academic, athletic, and arts programs in the natural beauty of the island.

Summer at HPA offers students an exceptional four-week boarding and educational experience that’s not only structured for academic enrichment, it’s designed to allow everyone to make the most of summer on this awe-inspiring island, which is home to 80 percent of the world’s ecosystems.

The courses available for students in grades 6-12 are richly diverse and very enlightening. Every day and every course offer new adventures of discovery in nature, science, technology, creativity, and world cultures. Imagine being able to build an awareness of the strength and fragility of the local ecosystem in the morning before learning about the latest examples of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality technologies! And every week, students embark on a cultural journey that explores the food, language, music, and art of fascinating cultures, including those of Italy, Mexico, Japan, and, of course, Hawaiʻi.

Keeping the Future in Mind

The diverse academic courses appeal to a wide variety of interests. If your student has thought about pursuing a career as a crime scene investigator, a ballistics specialist, or a forensic pathologist, we’ve got it covered! Our students explore these topics and more through real case studies, guest speakers, and hands-on lab opportunities. Some of the scientific procedures include evidence collection, fingerprinting, DNA profiling, and handwriting analysis.

If robotics is your student's thing, our teachers will lead you through introductory classes that progress to group-based projects that will include building and coding electronic circuits that will be employed as integral parts of a real mobile robot. Teams will be formed; collaborative skills will be developed, and those skills will be applied in group competitions.

If the Internet is your student's area of interest and expertise, our technology department offers the option of learning the intricacies of HTML and CSS coding languages and programming using The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard training and developmental software.

Imagination and creativity are always in focus during the summer boarding program at Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy. Combining academics, creativity, and paradise is a sure-fire recipe for the future success of students from around the world!
